Labour of love - Writing, editing and self publishing

My book The Awakening first began when I was on maternity leave with my son who is now 3!!!(I told you it was a labour of love).  I wrote a few thousand words and then went back to work and forgot about it but a year or so later I began writing again and in the summer of 2012 I began to think about actually publishing it and gave it to my sister to read. She gave me a B+ and some encouragement.  I made a few changes and then she read it again and gave me an A and a smiley face. What more could you want.  So I started researching self publication and my journey began.

All the blogs, websites, Facebook pages I read seemed to advise editing/proof reading so I emailed a few people in November/December 2012 to get some quotes. They ranged from £350 to a jaw dropping £1000 for full on editing. Now whilst I wanted a good product I did not have that sort of money. One lady I emailed however suggested sending it to some beta readers and then amending sections myself. I knew what beta readers were but not how to find them but through the wonders of Facebook I found a few people that were interested and sent my document to them and anxiously awaited their verdicts.

In January 2013 I received my replies and on the whole the feedback was positive, encouraging and very helpful.  I made a lot of amendments and it really helped me improve my book but it took a while as I have a regular part time job and 2 children. In June 2013 I then sent the revised version to 2 further beta readers who really liked it and I finally made the decision to self publish. The last step was professional proofreading and a fab ebook cover and this was done in November 2013.  This finally brings us to the present and on the 6th December 2013 The Awakening went live.
